The Importance of Saving Money

If you had a conversation with me a few weeks ago, I would have told you that I absolutely hate saving. I loved investing money, but I hated saving money. The logic behind my thinking was that cash, sitting in a bank account is pretty much useless. It sits there earning next to no interest, typically eroding each year because of inflation.

I have all kinds of accounts with different banks and none of them are savings accounts. I was so “allergic” to savings that I actually refused to open up savings accounts. Any savings accounts that I had were always empty. Instead, I kept checking accounts and investment accounts.

Throughout my life I’ve invested in stocks, mutual funds, real estate, options, index funds, businesses, people and most often in myself and my personal development.

Growing up I knew some friends that were always into saving money. If they could save $0.50 on a $5.00 movie ticket by cutting out a coupon out of a cereal box, they would have. I couldn’t be bothered. My thinking has always been to just increase my income and not bother with saving. To me, trying to save money in terms of day to day spending equaled a lack mentality, and saving money instead of investing it equaled ignorance.

Nobody I have ever met in my life that was a good saver ever had any real wealth. Everyone I knew who was “cheap” and always focused on saving money had a very small net worth. Yes they may have been able save a few dollars here and a few dollars there, but after 5 years all they had saved up was $10,000. I’ve had investments that have made that much in profit in a few weeks, so why would I bother being “cheap” for 5 years just to save $10,000? Not only that, but by focusing my energy on increasing my income, instead of saving I could grow my income by $10,000/year quite easily and then I could make an extra $10,000/year every single year, compared to the other person who was so focused on saving.

My thinking has always been that money in the bank is useless. It should either be invested in some form of mutual fund or stock or some kind of investment that at least outpaces inflation, or put into some kind of real estate investment, or spent on investing in my biggest asset – myself.

Does this type of logic sound familiar to anyone?

Great, because I’m here to tell you that I now completely think it’s a pile of crap.

Learning to be a great saver is the only way to build true wealth.

Let me explain why.

As I mentioned above, throughout my life I have always focused my energies on increasing my income. Learning to increase your income is a very important side of the wealth building coin. It is much easier and faster to build wealth when your income is not limited by your thinking and beliefs. For example, if you work in a career field where you earn an income making $47,000/year and you expect to be making around the same amount for the next ten years, you haven’t yet learned that your income in unlimited. You have allowed society to dictate how much you’re worth and you’ve labeled yourself as a person who’s worth $50k/year.

I’ve smashed through those kinds of barriers and even though I have no formal post secondary degrees or even a college education, I’ve had years where I’ve earned hundreds of thousands of dollars in income and I’ve had years where I’ve also made less than $10,000 for the entire year. I believe that my income is truly unlimited. The only person who limits my income, is myself.

The challenge I’ve ran into though is that even though I know how to make “good money” by most people’s standards, I’ve been absolutely horrible at saving my money. I’m always investing my money into something. In some cases that may be real estate, while in other cases it may be in personal development courses to better myself.

Until last week I saw nothing wrong with that. Now I see the fallacy in my thinking.

Learning to be a Saver

Learning to be a disciplined saver is the other side of the wealth building coin. It really makes no difference whatsoever how much money you make in life, if you’re not saving a portion of it for yourself.

There are people who make millions of dollars per year out there and who end up having to borrow money at the end of the year to pay their taxes, while others who are making a modest income are able to consistently save more and more money every year.

People who make a lot of money but who don’t know how to save are just at a higher level of “broke”. Money flows through their life, but nothing ever gets retained.

What’s worse is that there is absolutely nothing more demotivating than making more and more money every year and still being broke. It happens to everyone. We make $3,000/month and we end up spending exactly that much. We work hard to bring that up to $4,000/month and sure enough our expenses now match that level of income. Pretty soon you’re making $8,000/month and you’re in the exact same boat. We always think that another $500/month would solve all of our problems. It doesn’t.

Saving Money as a Way To Increase Your Income

I’ve been really working on my mental game lately, diving into the depths of my psyche to try to understand myself better. Let me tell you what I found. I found that my ability to earn a substantial amount of income in a short period of time has been diminishing in the last few years and I couldn’t figure out the cause of it. That is until I learned about saving money.

See, what I’ve done in my life is that I’ve worked my butt off to make a lot of money, but then instead of saving it I spent it on all kinds of things. Toys, furniture, clothing, food, real estate, investments etc. The challenge is that if I look at my bank account right now, and I compare it to my bank account 15 years ago they look exactly the same. I’m not talking about my net worth here, that has grown, what I’m talking about is the actual amount of CASH in my bank account.

How many people can relate to that? Do you have the same amount of cash in your bank account as you did when you were a teenager? Maybe you even have less?

That’s the challenge I found myself in right there. In my mind, making more money began to not matter. What’s the point of making more money when your expenses just go up by the same amount and you still feel broke at the end of each month?

I have begun studying the work of Dr. John Demartini and he makes a huge case for learning how to save your money. Of course I have read about this in almost every book on finance I have ever read like Think and Grow Rich or The Richest Man in Babylon, but I never really understood the importance of saving. I thought that saving and investing were the same thing. They’re not.

Saving is when you put aside a certain amount of cash into your bank account and grow it into a nice little cushion for yourself and never touch it unless you are in a huge emergency. Ideally you want to have at least 90 days worth of your income in that cushion account. For me, I’m probably going to save up a year’s worth of income before moving into investing my savings.

What’s crazy about saving money is that the minute you make a decision to save a portion of your income “no matter what”, all of a sudden you find your income increasing. It’s like there is a built in motivational mechanism in our brains that is triggered once that decision is made. For example, if you truly decide that starting today you will save 10% of your gross income “no matter what”, you’ll be absolutely amazed how quickly you all of a sudden begin making more money.

The reason for this is because when you decide to pay yourself first, you’re making a statement to the Universe that you are worth more. You are declaring that you are important and that you deserve to get paid FIRST on your earnings. Everything else that needs to get paid becomes secondary. That includes your mortgage, electricity, Internet, taxes, food, etc. I know that to those who don’t save their money, it may sound absolutely ludicrous to think that saving money is more important than putting food on the table or paying for your electricity bill, but I assure you it’s not.

When you declare that you are worth more, the money to pay for all of those things will manifest itself in your life.

Saving money has the effect of increasing your income. Don’t believe me? Try it for six months and see what happens.

To become a master at manifesting things in your life you need to learn how to manage your emotional states. So many people I talk to about the Law of Attraction want to manifest money in their lives, but at the same time they are emotional basket-cases. They have no money in the bank, they have overdue bills, they have their landlord calling them for their rent money and they are trying to manifest millions using the Law of Attraction at the same time. Good luck with that.

It is so difficult to maintain a state of gratitude and love when your finances are a complete mess. Do you think it’s easier to resonate at a frequency of wealth and abundance when you have $25,000 in cash sitting in your bank account, or when your bank account is overdrawn by $500? You don’t need to a be a Law of Attraction guru to answer that one.

By learning how to save your income, you are automatically increasing your ability to attract and draw more money into your life. When we have a financial cushion sitting in our bank account, we resonate at a different frequency, and even more money begins flowing in.

Your ability to attract more money by having cash in the bank far outweighs any losses you may incur by not investing that money into something that earns a higher interest rate.

For example, if you have $25,000 in a liquid bank account that you can access at any time, you will resonate at a totally different frequency than if you have that same amount of money in equity in your home. Of course most people wouldn’t dare pull out the equity in their home and put it into a savings account because they’re afraid they’ll spend it – and that’s the whole point; you don’t TRUST yourself with money so why would the Universe trust you with it!

Does This Excuse Sound Familiar?

The excuse everyone typically has for not saving money is that they don’t have any money to save. They are barely making enough money to pay their bills. They fantasize about starting to save money as soon as they make more money than their bills. That will never happen. Unless you save your money first, there will never be anything left over at the end of the month.

What we make is what we spend. The good news is that what we spend also becomes what we make. That means if you set aside an extra $50/month into a savings account as a starting point for your savings plan, you will either increase your income by $50/m to compensate for that or your expenses will drop by $50/m. That’s just how things seem to always work out.

Everyone fights this logic. I used to fight it too. There is absolutely no valid excuse for not paying yourself first and saving a portion of your income. None.

Now I know some of you are thinking that if you were to save $100 at the beginning of the month, for example, that you may not have that $100 to pay your electricity bill and then your power will get disconnected and everything will fall apart. Well, here’s the thing. If you set aside $100 in the beginning of the month, and then you live that month and at the end of the month you haven’t made any extra money, and your expenses haven’t gone down at all, and you absolutely positively need to pay that electricity bill for $100, then just take it out of your savings and pay it! You haven’t lost anything. Next month try again.

There is absolutely no valid reason not to set aside a certain amount of income at the beginning of the month into your savings account. Worst cast scenario you end up pulling that money out to pay a bill because your income did not increase and your expenses didn’t drop like I said they probably will.

What if I’m right though? What if you save $100 and at the end of the month somehow you have enough money to cover everything? How awesome would that be? There’s nothing to lose in trying.

What if you put aside $100, and then at the end of the month you do notice that your income went up a bit and your expenses dropped, but you’re still short $50 for that electricity bill? Well then pull out $50 and pay it, but keep the other $50 in the savings account and try again the next month.

What have you got to lose?

Saving Money and Building Wealth

Like I said, learning to be a saver is the other side of the wealth building coin. There are many different systems of building wealth out there taught by many financial guru’s, but they all start with the same thing – saving a portion of your income.

Most guru’s will tell you that you should set aside at least 10% of your gross income into savings and grow it from there. What do you do from there? Nothing. Keep setting side 10% of your income into a cash account, or some totally liquid account that earns a little bit of interest, but that doesn’t ever lose any of it’s value. Keep saving and saving and saving until you have at least 90 days worth of your income in cash set aside as a cushion.

What do you do from there? Then you’ve earned the right to start investing into something a little bit less conservative. There is a whole system of growing your money from there, but it’s beyond the scope of this post. I wouldn’t worry about it too much until you’ve at least gotten to the point where you have your money saved.

My Experience So Far

I just started following this plan this week. So far I have seen a huge shift in my way of being. Even though I’ve just started to put aside a small amount per month, I’m all of a sudden feeling the urge to go out and earn more money because I want to grow my savings account. I’ve also seen a huge increase in my income that happened right after I made the decision to save a portion of my income no matter what.

What’s more amazing than that is that all of sudden I’m starting to see that all the great wealth builders out there that have built and kept their wealth are great savers. My previous beliefs were filtering that out before, but now I see that learning to be a great saver is a huge part of building wealth.

One of the easiest ways to look stupid on your blog, even if you have the most brilliant ideas ever, is to have spelling and grammar mistakes. We’ve all done it occasionally. The sentence that you thought made sense at 3am, or the word that both you and spell check missed. But if you’ve got habitual spelling and grammar mistakes on your site, it can affect the way people perceive you, and may keep them from treating you like an authority within your niche.

Now, I’m not saying that everything has to be perfect, or that you need to adhere to all the rules of grammar. It doesn’t really matter if you prefer to write ‘2’ rather than spell out ‘two’, no matter what the AP Style Guide says. As well, there are certain grammar rules that we all learned in school that you can disregard. I start sentences with ‘and’ and ‘because’ and use sentence fragments and ‘y’all’ and other colloquialisms, because I’m writing in a conversational tone, and I want it to sound like it would if I were talking.

But there are certain things you need to do, like make sure that you’re using the right word. Know the difference between then/than and affect/effect, not to mention their/there/they’re and your/you’re. If you’re not sure, check. In fact, it would be worthwhile to take a primer on the basic grammar laws – there are lots of resources out there, so you have no excuse.

And that’s what it really comes down to for a lot of us. We’re lazy. We either don’t bother proofreading at all, or we do it so quickly that it’s no surprise that mistakes make it through and get published on our sites.

Here are some guidelines to follow when proofreading to make sure you don’t look like an idiot:

Check your post the way your audience will be viewing it.
With web content, that means viewing it inside a browser. With blog posts especially, it means previewing it before publishing it. This can show you if your text is too dense, or the font is too small.

But don’t forget good old-fashioned paper, either.
There really is no substitute for printing out a hard copy and going over it with a pen. You can find a lot of mistakes this way that you probably missed when viewing it on your screen.

Read it out loud.
You might want to wait until you’re alone, but this is a really useful tool for finding those pesky typing mistakes where you thought you typed ‘through’ and you really typed ‘thought’. It won’t make sense when you read it out loud.

Read it backwards.
This is an old copy-editor trick. By going through something backwards, you’re forced to concentrate on the individual words, instead of the phrases and the meanings behind them. A lot of mistakes make it through because, when we read, we recognize the word that’s supposed to be there instead of the one that actually is.

Sorry, single folks, but if you wish to increase your odds of building significant wealth, it looks like you’re going to need to get hitched. That is, according to stats released by the most recent Census Bureau study.

The fact of the matter is that two pay cheques really do appear to be better than one, with the net worth of the average married couple being significantly higher than that of their single counter parts. Married couples averaged a net worth of is $101,975, with single folks achieving significantly less at $23,700 for men, and $20,217 for women.

The study found that those who stay in long term marriages (unfortunately, many marriages these days are not long term) accumulate twice the wealth of those who remain single. Now married folks, if you desire to hang on to that accumulated wealth, you should do your best to avoid a divorce. Those who divorced were found by the study to have their net worth as individuals reduced to 77 percent compared to the average single folks mentioned above.

This is also why it is important for both individuals in the marriage to always be aware of the household’s financial matters and for both to come to a consensus on money-related matters.

A steady flow of good web traffic increases the potential of any web-based business to make money online but many online business owners know that internet marketing can be expensive. This is why online business owners are so attracted to free web traffic platforms. However, free platforms to gain web traffic have its own advantages and disadvantages.

Apart from the fact that they save website owners a lot of money, some methods to drive free web traffic can help you increase other people's awareness of your online business. Some of them can also help you establish your reputation. Among the methods that will allow you to do this are publishing articles on free article directories and increasing your presence in forums. The make money online niche is an internet marketing playground that is so competitive that very few are able to make it to the first couple pages of the Google SERP’s (i.e. search engine ranking places). The reason that seems to be the case is fairly obvious and can be attributed to the fact that when people learn about search engine optimization they typically tend to stumble across the information when searching for the term, “make money online.”

In addition, because it is such a competitive niche, it becomes sort of a challenge in itself to rank and maintain ranking in the arena to prove themselves to other bloggers and webmasters. The funny thing is that if those people spent their energy targeting alternate niches like cosmetic surgery, dieting and health and even saltwater aquarium keeping, they would be able to make money online at a much quicker pace then those that are struggling to make it to the top in more competitive niches…

Rank Checker by SEO Tools

This is a fantastic Firefox plugin that lets you input keyword terms and your website to track the progress and ranking places of your targeted phrases. It will save the results so you can perform your searches on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. This tool is amazing and I don’t know what I would do without it!

Some of the additional tools I use and would highly recommend although they will need to be purchased include: SEO Elite and Webcomp Analyzer.

The “how to make money online” niche is extremely challenging to break into and receive a large amount of organic search traffic. It is my recommendation to start with something a bit easier if you are hoping to make a living from internet marketing in the near future. At bare minimum I would recommend targeting a few other niches at the same time. Stop Planning: 50 Ways to Improve Your Finances Today

I only have one resolution for 2008: action.

You can set all the right goals, have all the right intentions, and know all the right stuff, but if you don’t act, none of it means anything. I learned that when I was a teenager, and it’s the only resolution I’ve made ever since.

If you want to achieve your financial goals, I think you should make it your only resolution too. Most people spend their entire lives intending to get rich but never make it, and it’s almost always because they never actually do anything

So take action. Here’s how:

First, forget about planning for 2008. A year is too long of a timeline. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time remembering what I’m supposed to be doing for 15 minutes, much less an entire year.

Second, focus on today. Figure out just one thing you can do today to move yourself closer to the finances you’ve always wanted. Then do it.

Third, pick one thing the next day, and the next day, and the next day, until you wake up six months from now and realize you’ve already achieved all of your goals for 2008, and you have to set new ones.

If you’re having trouble coming up with one thing to do, I’ve put together a list of 50 ideas to get you started.

1. Fill out the paperwork to start a new LLC for the company you’ve always wanted

2. Sign up for a high yield savings account and transfer money that’s just sitting in your checking account

3. Increase the size of your 401(k) contribution from every paycheck

4. Instead of going out to dinner tonight, use the money to pay down your Christmas debt

5. Setup a Roth IRA and schedule monthly contributions to eventually reach your annual maximum

6. Call your mortgage broker to see if you could save any money by refinancing your house (be sure to include fees in your calculations)

7. Give your boss a list of the ways you made or saved your company money last year and then ask for a raise

8. Figure out new ways to make or save your company money this year and start doing them

9. Audit your credit cards, figuring out which ones to pay off first and examining any other ways to save money

10. Cancel monthly subscriptions that you forgot you were paying

11. Cancel domain name renewals for URLs you no longer care about

12. Send a query letter to a trade magazine about writing an article for them that positions you as an expert

13. Start a blog that demonstrates your expertise and builds preeminence in your niche

14. If you can’t find time to manage your finances, setup interviews with several financial planners that can

15. If you have a second home on the market and it’s not selling, consider canceling the listing and putting a “For Rent” sign in the yard

16. Pull your credit report and examine it for ways to improve your score (helping you get better rates)

17. Remind friends and family of money they “borrowed” from you last year and propose a repayment plan

18. Call your 5 best clients and ask them for ways to improve your service or product this year

19. If they can’t think of any, ask them for referrals to their friends (after all, your company is perfect)

20. While you’re at it, ask those same clients to write a short testimonial or letter of recommendation

21. Then fire your 3 worst clients, dedicating your time to finding new and better ones

22. Fire the employee that’s doing nothing for your company but bleeding you for a monthly paycheck

23. Register for an industry conference, where you can build relationships with powerful people

24. Offer to speak at the conference about a topic all of your peers would like to know more about

25. Hire a professional to rewrite your rÃ©sumÃ© and then go jobhunting

26. If your product or service clearly provides more value than it costs, raise your rates or prices and see what happens

27. Send out an e-mail to your friends, asking if they know of any killer job openings coming up that you might qualify for

28. Apply for an evening program to get your graduate degree

29. Write a proposal for ways your company can improve and send it to a higher up that cares

30. Talk to your spouse about going back to work, if there’s no longer a good reason for them to stay at home

31. If your spouse isn’t excited about personal finance, talk about going to a seminar together, and if they agree, register for one

32. Start a personal web site at yourname.com and upload your rÃ©sumÃ©, portfolio, press clippings, articles, contact information, and anything else that you’d like others to see

33. Buy some business cards and put your personal web site on them, so you can hand them out to people that might want to hire you

34. Call a company that offers a complementary product or service to yours and ask if they’d like to promote your product or service for a commission

35. While you’re at it, ask if you can promote their product or service for a commission

36. Instead of watching television tonight, read a few chapters of a personal-finance book

37. In fact, cancel your cable or satellite service. You don’t need it, and you’ll get a lot more done without it

38. Write a press release about something genuinely remarkable your company is doing and send it to the local media

39. If you’ve always wanted to write a book, buy a book about writing your proposal and set aside the time to read it

40. Join the Chamber of Commerce and network with other business leaders in your community

41. Schedule an appointment with a nutritionist to create a diet that will give you more energy to tackle your finances

42. Consider hiring a part-time housekeeper and dedicating those hours to starting your own company or bettering your career

43. Ask someone that’s more financially successful than you are to lunch and get their advice on how to improve

44. Find an Accountability Partner and talk with them for 15 minutes every morning about what you’re going to that day

45. Read (or reread) a few chapters of Getting Things Done and take an hour to put the principles in practice

46. If you’re not already using a personal-finance software package, tinker with a program like Quicken or Mint and decide if it’s something you can commit to

47. If you’re unsatisfied with your accountant, send an e-mail to your friends and ask for recommendations

48. Put little reminders about your financial objectives beside your computer and on the back of your door, so you don’t forget them

49. Take an hour to decide if those objectives are really important to you, and if not, revise them

50. Somehow, some way, take action today, moving yourself toward your financial objectives, instead of just thinking about them

How to Find Work That You Love — A Logical Guide

“So… uhh… how do I find a job that I love?”

Talk about money long enough, and the question inevitably comes up. And it should.

Most of us spend 60-80% of our waking hours doing something work-related. If you don’t enjoy that work, then it means you’re unhappy 60-80% of the time. Logical, right?

It would also make sense that the quickest way to improve your happiness would be to improve your enjoyment of the thing you spend the most time doing. Since that’s work, you wonder if you couldn’t find something better.

But the question is, “How?”

Here’s what I think: the answer is in the title of this post.

Let’s break it down, starting at the end of the title and working our way back to the beginning.

Step One: Define Love

The word “love” describes a huge variety of emotions. What does it mean to you?

Meaningful
Fun
Abundant
Relaxing
Fulfilling

Most people just think they’ll “know it when they find it,” but I think that’s wrong. You’ll find it when you know it, not the other way around.

Take some time and figure out exactly what you mean when you say “love.” Envision it. That way, you’ll at least know what you’re looking for.

Step Two: Define You

It’s funny what happens when you try to define a word like love. You start thinking about yourself.

Who are you right now?
Who do you want to be?
What do you really want?
Can you really have it?
Do you really deserve it?

Finding happiness is more about self-discovery than career advice, and self-discovery usually starts with hard questions. If you want a meaningful career, find the courage to ask them.

Step Three: Define Work

Once you know who you are and what you want, you can start tackling concepts like work. For most people, “work” and “happiness” don’t really go together. Work means:

Being ticked off at your boss
Doing stuff you don’t enjoy
A never-ending competition
Dealing with bureaucracy
Fighting to be noticed

If you want work that you love, then you’ll have to change your conception of work. You might even want to remove the word from your vocabulary entirely.

Personally, I divide actions into two categories: those moving me toward my objectives and those NOT moving me toward my objectives. I try to always do the former and never do the latter.

Ever since, I’ve never had a problem finding the motivation to “work.” Isn’t that interesting?

Step Four: Define Find

The act of “finding” normally involves the act of “searching.” So, if you want to find a job you love, you have to commit yourself to searching for it. That means:

Reading about other jobs and professions
Asking people what their work is like
Keeping an eye out for interesting opportunities
Applying for jobs and going on interviews

Think of yourself like a detective, methodically searching for a missing person. You don’t just wait for them to appear out of nowhere. You have to go looking for them.

Step Five: Define How

Here’s the big question: once you find a job that looks like one you’d love, how do you go about getting it? You might need to:

Pay for some specialized training
Build your reputation as an expert
Network with influencers in industry
Get some relevant work experience
Actually apply for the job

Whatever it requires, do it. If you get turned down, just keep asking until you either find out why and fix the problem or they hire you because of your persistence. Remember, you’re either moving closer, or you’re not.

How to Find Work That You Love

Didn’t I tell you the answer was in the title? If you look carefully, we’ve worked through every content word in the sentence, starting with “love” and ending with “how.”

You can approach most problems this way. Just break them down, figure out what all of the words mean, and you’ll automatically start to understand what to do.

The one thing I’ll add is, you might need to go through this process several times. You’ll start your dream job, find out you don’t like it as much as you thought, and then move onto the next one.

I’m going through that process for the fourth time in nine years. Every time, I get a little closer, enjoying my work a little more.

Kissing ass, sucking up, brown nosing.

We have lots of terms for trying to make someone like you, almost all of them dirty. It’s seen as a manipulative, shallow, and dishonest.

But damn if it isn’t effective.

If you master the art of charming people, everything becomes easier — making the sale, getting the promotion, keeping your job. You’ll make more money, create more friendships, and feel more secure.

The key is doing it right. Kissing ass has gotten a bad rap because so many people are bad at it. They’re like amateur magicians that the crowd boos because their tricks are obvious.

Unfortunately though, the technique is light on training materials. You can’t take Brown Nosing 101 in college or browse through the Sucking up section at the bookstore.

What we need is a guide for how to kiss ass effectively… which is why I’ve written one.

Ass Doesn’t Taste so Bad

The first step in learning to kiss ass effectively is to get rid of the bad taste in your mouth that comes just from thinking about it. If you’re disgusted by what you’re doing, you’ll never be able to do it well.

What’s so wrong about getting someone to like you? You’ve probably done it to get laid or talk your way out of a speeding ticket. If it works and doesn’t hurt anybody, then why not carry those skills over into business?

After all, most people like having their ass kissed, as long as the one doing the kissing is good at it. I know I do. We all like to be around people that make us feel better about ourselves. It’s only human.

So why feel guilty about it?

You’ve Got to like Asses

You can never become a top-notch ass kisser unless you genuinely like people. All people. Otherwise, they’ll be able to tell that you don’t really mean it, and they’ll hate you for trying to manipulate them.

How does one go about learning to like people?

Part of it is realizing that, whether you like it or not, you’re a lot like everyone else on this planet. You feel the same emotions, make the same mistakes, and have the same desire for people to love you anyway.

Another part is teaching yourself to see the good side of people. Work at it long enough, and you can find something you genuinely like about anyone, even if it’s only their talent for making you hate them.

Either way, if you’re going to kiss someone’s ass, you need to put yourself in the right state of mind. You need to like them, and they need to know it.

Don’t Overdo It

Second to disliking them, the worst mistake you can make when kissing someone’s ass is to overdo it. You want them to like you, so you give a compliment that obviously isn’t true or you shower them with too many compliments in a row.

It doesn’t work because people know when you’re lying.

If you walk in for an interview and immediately start complementing the furniture, family pictures, and everything else you can find, they’ll know what you’re doing, and they’ll know it’s dishonest. No one is that impressed.

Similarly, if your boss drives a piece of junk car, you’d be stupid to try and convince him that it’s the prettiest one you’ve ever seen. Compliment him on his frugality or disregard for what other people think, but don’t lie to him. He’s smarter than that.

The problem with overdoing it is that it insults people’s intelligence. You think you’re making them feel better, but in reality, you’re very sweetly telling them that you think they’re gullible enough to believe your nonsense. Don’t do it.

Instead, just be natural. If you see something you genuinely appreciate, complement it and move on. They’ll appreciate you noticing, even if it’s something simple.

Kissing Ass Takes Practice

The first time you kiss someone’s ass, you’ll probably do it wrong. Worse, since you’ve read this article, you’ll probably know it. You might be embarrassed, trip all over yourself, and feel horrible about how inept you are.

Accept it and move on.

Learning the fine art of ass kissing is like every other skill. It takes practice. The masters of the craft dedicate years to it, honing their skills of observation and delivery. And they make plenty of mistakes.

I recommend practicing on your relatives. Your mom, for instance, is morally obligated to like you, no matter how dishonest you are. Try throwing out a compliment every now and again. Once she gets over the shock, she’ll probably appreciate it, and you’ll get valuable practice.

You should also start with safe complements. Tell someone you like their shoes or their car. Don’t try to be clever. Just spit it out, saying something like “I really like those shoes,” and see what happens.

It takes time, but you’ll get a feel for how people will respond.

Use Your Skills to Your Advantage

Once you feel comfortable with your skills, put them to work to help you make more money. Here are some ideas:

Find something positive that your company is doing and tip off the press, using yourself as a source
When a coworker covers for you, send them a thank you note that says, “These days, not many people watch out for each other, and it means a lot that you would cover for me. Thanks for being a great human being.”
If a customer finds some genuine flaws with your product, tell them it’s the most insightful feedback you’ve heard in months and ask for their permission to pass it on to product development team
The next time your boss says something smart, ask him or her to repeat it and then write it down
If your company has an Employee of the Month Program or something like it, make a habit of nominating coworkers you notice doing something good
Do things like these on a regular basis, and you’ll notice that people are a little happier to see you. You might start getting invited to more parties, or people may start making a point to introduce you to other movers and shakers.

In the end, making people like you is no substitute for genuine talent, but it helps give you a chance to display that talent. For instance:

Your boss will start to pay more attention to you, making it more likely he or she will notice your achievements
Your coworkers will respond more positively to your ideas, making it more likely they’ll help you implement them
Your customers will enjoy spending time with you, making it easier for you to get sales appointments
None of those benefits will directly make you more money, but indirectly, they can add up to significant increases in your value to everyone around you. As your value increases, you’ll also have more “ammunition” when you ask for a promotion or raise.

Even more importantly, the higher you go in business, the more important it is for people to like you. The price of stock in publicly traded companies changes dramatically based on how much people like the CEO.

You can never get to that level without becoming a master ass kisser. Like it or not, that’s how the game is played.

How I Got a Six-Figure Salary Straight Out Of College

Who says you have to be old before you start making the good money?

When I graduated college, I had 14 job offers, two of them for more than $100,000 a year. No, I didn’t go to a prestigious school like Harvard or Stanford. And no, I didn’t graduate with an advanced degree in law or medicine.

I had a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. By all accounts, I should’ve been making only about $30,000 a year. Maybe less.

Instead, I took a job with a salary higher than most people achieve in their lifetimes. And I was only 21 years old.

Let me show you how I did it.

Start Building Your RÃ©sumÃ© Early

Work experience. It’s a bitch, but employers want you to prove yourself before they hand over the big bucks. It can take a long time to convince them too — like a decade.

The trick to making a lot of money when you’re young is to start that decade as soon as possible. I started building my rÃ©sumÃ© at the age of 12, so when I graduated at 21, I had nine years of work experience.

I worked as a videogame designer for six years, eventually starting my own company at the age of 18 to build virtual-reality software that would teach people languages. After that, I got involved with the university, getting a job as the Chief of Staff of our Student Government Association. Then I started a campus radio station, run 24 hours a day by a staff of about 60 volunteers.

By the time I graduated, my rÃ©sumÃ© was already several pages long and accompanied by a stack of articles, newspaper clippings, and work examples. I also had five years of management experience. In other words, I had the rÃ©sumÃ© of a 31 year-old (or older) person.

Am I saying that you have to start working at the age of 12? No, but if you want a good job after college, you’d better have more on your rÃ©sumÃ© than three years of waiting tables at Denny’s. Start building relevant work experience as soon as possible.

Get Noticed by the Right People

Then again, work experience by itself isn’t enough. You need the right people to notice your talent and to believe in you.

Having a rÃ©sumÃ© like mine at the age of 21 was already enough to raise eyebrows, but my disability made me stand out even more. The advantage to being severely disabled is no one expects much of you, and when you do anything worth talking about, they think it’s amazing.

The combination of the things I was doing and my disability got me a lot of attention. I was frequently in the newspaper, and everyone from the janitors to the Chancellor knew me. Plus, I got to know dozens of local business owners by doing promotions with the radio station.

The point is, I got the attention of all of the right people. If you want to make a six-figure salary straight out of college, you want dozens of employers to be counting the days until you graduate, so they fall all over themselves trying to snatch you up.

Of course, they have to know who you are first. So spend some time networking within your industry while you’re in college. Volunteer to work for free, send press releases to local newspapers about your accomplishments, write articles for trade journals, and continually ask people to introduce you to others.

Get to know everybody and let them see your talent. Otherwise, you’ll just be another nameless graduate, entering the workforce with a horde of other nameless graduates, destined to fight for that same $32,000, entry-level job.

Forget about Doing What You Love for a While

When you’re in college, everyone from your parents to your professors to career advisors give you the same career advice: “Do what you love.”

In my opinion, that’s just stupid.

You didn’t go to college to find fulfillment. You went so that you could get a well-paying job. Plus, you’re barely out of adolescence. How are you supposed to have any idea what career is going to fulfill you?

I went to school to become an English teacher. After graduating, I even got a job offer from a local high school to start teaching… for a grand total of $28,000 per year. I’m sure I would’ve loved it, but I’m also sure I would’ve been miserable. I’m not the type of person that enjoys poverty.

Instead, I took a job in real estate development. I never really enjoyed the work, but it helped me to buy the lifestyle that I did enjoy. It’s also allowed me to retire at the age of 25 and do exactly what I want to do: write this blog post.

If you want my advice, forget about fulfillment for a while. Get out there and make some money. You can always experiment with other careers later, and it’s a lot easier to make the transition if you’ve got a decent bankroll.

In the future, I’m going to write a lot more about this, but for now, we can boil it down to this: if you get a six-figure job offer, accept it for gods sake.

Who taught Elvis how to dance, received the Congressional Medal of Honor, got Nixon impeached, became the world ping-pong champion, built a national shrimping empire, and fathered Haley Joel Osment?

One man: Forrest Gump.

If I could choose one mentor in business, or in life in general, it would be Gump. I don’t care that he’s not real. The wisdom that he conveys is real, and I think we could all learn something from it.

Let’s listen to what he has to say, and I’ll translate his Gumpisms into advice that, if followed, will make you a much more successful moneymaker:

And cause I was a gazillionaire, and I liked doin it so much, I cut that grass for free.

The whole point of making lots of money is to buy your freedom. If that means cutting grass, then by all means, cut the grass. Many wealthy people chase money for so long that they forget about everything else. It’s a mistake. Never become so obsessed that you lose touch with the little things in life that you enjoy.

I’m not a smart man… but I know what love is.

Smarts aren’t everything. You can have an IQ of 180, but if you don’t know care about other people, you’ll never understand your customers or win the support of your peers. Instead, learn to care. Give customers the products they truly need, support your coworkers, and build a company that not only makes a profit but somehow changes the world for the better.

Stupid is as stupid does.

While you’re at it, change your entire conception of smart. In the end, the people that we call geniuses aren’t the ones with high IQs; they’re the people that make the right decisions over and over again. Similarly, lots of people with high IQs do stupid stuff… like not putting the gun together when the drill sergeant tells them to.

When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go… you know… I went.

Only a fool goes without sleep, survives on fast food, and refuses to take breaks. You’ll burn out after a few years, where someone that takes care of themselves stays productive until they’re 90. You can still do great things; just realize you’re not going to do them in one day. Healthy careers last decades, and you’ll need a healthy body to go the distance.

Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.

Find a mentor. Maybe it’s your Momma, or maybe it’s a blogger that tells it like it is (ah hem). The point is you can’t figure it all out on your own, and you shouldn’t try. Look for people that explain things in just the right way for you to understand them, and then expose yourself to as much of their wisdom as possible.

I gotta save Bubba!

Don’t turn into another corporate coward that leaves people behind when things go bad. The real heroes in business are willing to lose everything for the people around them. Nothing creates more loyalty than selflessness, and it’s more valuable than gold. Besides, if you’re wealthy, you should have some nice, cushy buttocks to protect you against that million-dollar wound.

Jenny taught me how to climb. And I taught her how to dangle.

No one gets rich alone. If someone shows you how to “climb” the ladder of success, then don’t forget about them when they’re “dangling” from it, about fall off. Help them dangle more gracefully, or reciprocate any other chance you get. It’s not about keeping score, exactly, but creating an attitude of generosity in both yourself and others. That’s how you get to the top.

My Momma always said you’ve got to put the past behind you before you can move on.

Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do in life is let go. If your company has been on the verge of bankruptcy for two years with no reasonable hope of recovering, then maybe it’s time to jump ship. Or, just as importantly, you can only ride on past successes for so long before its time to do something new. Either way, don’t let the past distract you from the future you want to create.

I’m sorry I had to fight in the middle of your Black Panther party.

Apologize, even if you’re not wrong. It’s better than getting your ass kicked (or fired).

Now you wouldn’t believe me if I told you, but I could run like the wind blows.

Brag. Shamelessly. Of course, I’m not talking about writing a press release about how you got an A on your term paper, but if you’ve done something genuinely remarkable, then you owe it to people to tell them about it. Do it with a little style, and they’ll love you for it. Forrest spends the entire movie bragging, and people skip their bus to find out what happens next.

My Momma always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

How could I not include this one?

Instead of worrying about which job you should take, which project you should work on, or which company you should start, just line them all up, choose the one you think you’ll like, and take a bite. You’ll probably enjoy them all, but it’s only by “tasting” the opportunities in life that you’ll truly live.

That’s all I have to say about that.
